Complete Track Listing for 18-CD Bob Dylan ‘Cutting Edge’ Set

Bob Dylan in the studio with the great blues guitarist Michael Bloomfield during the recording of Highway 61 Revisited.

Official info from Bob Dylan’s website:

The 18CD Collector’s Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 is limited to a worldwide pressing of only 5,000 copies, and includes every note recorded during the 1965-1966 sessions, every alternate take and alternate lyric. All previously unreleased recordings have been mixed, utilizing the original studio tracking tapes as the source, eliminating unwanted 1960s-era studio processing and artifice.

The 18CD edition includes Dylan’s original nine mono 45 RPM singles released during the time period, packaged in newly created picture sleeves featuring global images from the era. The limited edition includes rare hotel room recordings from the Savoy Hotel in London (May 4, 1965), the North British Station Hotel in Glasgow (May 13, 1966) and a Denver, Colorado hotel (March 12, 1966) as well as a strip of original film cels from “Don’t Look Back.”

The price? $599.99

Audio: Jerry Garcia Does Bob Dylan’s ‘Visions Of Johanna” – 16+ Minutes

I always dug Jerry Garcia’s voice and I think it’s perfect for delivering this song. Intuitively Garcia got this song, and you hear it.

Some great guitar playing on some of these versions too.

Here’s a studio recording of “Visions of Johanna” by Garcia.

Here’s the Grateful Dead doing “Visions of Johanna” live, The Spectrum, March 18, 1995, Philadelphia, PA:

And a version from the Dead at Hampton Coliseum, March 19, 1986, Hampton, VA:

PopMatters Gives ‘True Love Scars’ a Rave Review – ‘a whirlwind tale of a young music fanatic’s quest’

Yesterday the pop culture site PopMatters, posted a terrific review of my novel “True Love Scars.”

PopMatters contributing editor Greg M. Schwartz writes:

…the novel is a whirlwind tale of a young music fanatic’s quest for true love, high times and “the authentic real” (not necessarily in that order).

Teenage protagonist Michael Stein, aka “Writerman”, lives in Marin County and longs to be a musician, or at least a music writer. He’s into almost all of the musical icons of the era, especially Bob Dylan. Writerman is obsessed with finding his “Visions of Johanna” chick, who eventually appears in the form of Sweet Sarah. But conflict is ordained from the start. Chapter One begins with Writerman speaking in a sort of fever dream about how he betrayed and lost Sarah and has been on a quest to redeem his crushed soul ever since.

And later in the review, talking about the narrator’s obsession with Bob Dylan, Schwartz writes:

He can analyze those Dylan lyrics all day. He and a girl who’s charmingly fond of speaking in Dylan lyrics pore over Dylan’s albums in a scene from 1965, going over his evolution as an artist. “First time I heard that Dylan song it saved my life,” Writerman says of “Like a Rolling Stone”. It’s a sentiment that speaks for several generations of rock ‘n’ rollers, from those who came of age in Goldberg’s era to the present. They get deep into Dylanology in the scene as Writerman speaks of how Dylan opened his eyes to “how almost nothing is what it appears to be and I think that’s when I got it in my head I got to figure out the authentic real, see the world for what it is and not the facade of delusional humans erect in front of the truth.”

That’s what great rock ‘n’ roll can do, and True Love Scars is deeply dialed in to rock’s dichotomy of enlightening powers versus stonered party time.

So I happened onto this video of Dylan performing “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” in Ferrara, Italy in 1996 and his singing was quite good and the feel of the performance was great. So I started wondering what else there might be from 1996 and I found some very cool videos.

Audio: Bob Dylan’s ‘Blonde On Blonde’ New York Sessions — Left On the Cutting Room Floor

On October 5, 1965 Bob Dylan began recording Blonde On Blonde at Columbia Recording Studios, Studio A in New York.

Off and on through January 27, 1965 Dylan and a bunch of musicians that included The Band made many recordings. Most of them didn’t make it onto Blonde On Blonde. After that Dylan headed for Nashville where the bulk of the album was cut.

Below are some of the New York versions recorded. I’m obsessed with Blonde On Blonde, so I find all of these fascinating.

Audio: Ten of Bob Dylan’s Most Mysterious Lyrics; Do You Know What They Mean?

Since I first heard Bob Dylan in 1965 — “Like A ROlling Stone” was on the radio — I’ve loved his voice, his music and his lyrics.

But I think I keep coming back to his songs again and again because I still don’t understand everything he’s saying.

There are layers of meaning in some of the songs.

Here are ten lyrics that I still don’t completely understand. Do you?

If you can help explain what even one of these means, let me know.

1 “She knows there’s no success like failure

And that failure’s no success at all” — from “Love Minus Zero, No Limit”

2 “You will search, babe
At any cost
But how long, babe
Can you search for what’s not lost?
Everybody will help you
Some people are very kind
But if I can save you any time
Come on, give it to me
I’ll keep it with mine ” from “I’ll Keep It With Mine”

I'll Keep It With Mine by Bob Dylan on Grooveshark

3 “Now when Ill teach that lady I was born to love her
But she knows that the kingdom waits so high above her
And I run but I race but it’s not too fast or slow
But I dont perceive her, I’m not there, I’m gone

Well, it’s all about confusion and I cry for her
Well, I dont need anybody now beside me to tell
And its all affirmation I receive but its not
Shes adorned by the beauty but she don’t like the spot and she won’t” from “I’m Not There” (I’m not sure of those lyrics are accurate.)

I'm Not There by Bob Dylan & The Band on Grooveshark

4 “Too much of nothing
Can make a man abuse a king
He can walk the streets and boast like most
But he wouldn’t know a thing
Now, it’s all been done before
It’s all been written in the book
But when there’s too much of nothing
Nobody should look” — from “Too Much Of Nothing”

Too Much of Nothing by Bob Dylan on Grooveshark

5 “Buy me a flute
And a gun that shoots
Tailgates and substitutes
Strap yourself
To the tree with roots
You ain’t goin’ nowhere
Whoo-ee! Ride me high
Tomorrow’s the day
My bride’s gonna come
Oh, oh, are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair!” — from “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”

04 You Ain't Going Nowhere by Bob Dylan on Grooveshark

6 “Mona tried to tell me
To stay away from the train line
She said that all the railroad men
Just drink up your blood like wine
An’ I said, “Oh, I didn’t know that
But then again, there’s only one I’ve met
An’ he just smoked my eyelids
An’ punched my cigarette”
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again” – from “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again”

Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again by Bob Dylan on Grooveshark

7 “She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks
She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks
She’s a hypnotist collector
You are a walking antique” – “She Belongs To Me”

Also, why did Dylan change “Egyptian red ring” to Egyptian ring” and was a red ring significant?

8 “Louise, she’s all right, she’s just near
She’s delicate and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
That Johanna’s not here
The ghost of ’lectricity howls in the bones of her face
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place” from “Visions of Johanna”

Visions of Johanna by Bob Dylan on Grooveshark

9 “Dear Landlord
Please don’t put a price on my soul
My burden is heavy
My dreams are beyond control
When that steamboat whistle blows
I’m gonna give you all I got to give
And I do hope you receive it well
Dependin’ on the way you feel that you live

Dear landlord
Please heed these words that I speak
I know you’ve suffered much
But in this you are not so unique
All of us, at times, we might work too hard
To have it too fast and too much
And anyone can fill his life up
With things he can see but he just cannot touch” – From “Dear Landlord”

Dear Landlord by Bob Dylan on Grooveshark

10 “Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
He looked so immaculately frightful
As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
And reciting the alphabet
Now you would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row” – from “Desolation Row”

Listen: Deep Into Bob Dylan’s “Visions Of Johanna”

“Visions Of Johanna” is an endlessly fascinating song. It’s a song that reveals itself slowly, over the years. And then the light changes and you hear it totally different.

I’ve gathered together two outtakes from when Dylan was calling the song “Freeze Out,” a bunch of live recordings from the 1966 tour of Australia and Europe, and the official version released on “Blonde On Blonde.”

Enjoy.
