Video: Nirvana Live at the L. A. Forum, 1993 — last live footage

This footage of Nirvana was shot by Dave Markey (“The Year Punk Broke”) on December 30, 1993.

Watch the group perform The Vaselines’ “Jesus,” David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” and “All Apologies.” The sound is iffy at times.

Dave Markey writes:

20 years ago tonight (December 30, 1993) I stood on Kurt’s side of the stage at my hometown’s Los Angeles Forum and captured the last set I would see of this band. A band that I had worked with, toured with; people that I would call my friends. A band that both the world and myself really loved (can’t really say this has happened since.) Within just a few short months it would sadly all be over. Sharing a few songs here; a couple covers (Vaselines’ “Jesus” & Bowie’s “Man Who Sold The World”) and All Apologies. I’m glad to have documented this show, as well as their pre-fame fun in 1991.

Yesterday, following Phil Everly’s death, Harold Lepidus (at examiner.com) did a great post about songs by Bob Dylan that the Everly Brothers covered, and songs by the Everlys that Dylan covered.

Unfortunately, he only included audio of one of those songs.

So today I tracked down all of the audio and you can check it out below.

There’s a very cool, very loose version of “All I Can Do Is Dream” that Dylan sang while jamming with George Harrison in 1970, and a version of “Let It Be Me” off a B-side of the European “Heart Of Mine” single released in 1981).

Today the teen site Rookie posted this recording of “Love Letters” by Spoon’s Britt Daniel and wrote:

For this month’s theme song, I sent Britt, who’s a big fan of girl-group pop, half a dozen songs that female teen idols had made popular in the ’50s or ’60s as suggestions/thought-provokers, and he elected to do a take on Shelley Fabares version of “Love Letters” (from her 1962 album, Shelly!).

Fabares’s public image was the very ideal of purity and sweetness, and her songs were all about the rapture of young love—a perfect choice for this month’s theme, Forever.

Daniel himself explained to Rookie: “I knew the Ketty Lester version from ‘Blue Velvet.’ When Divine Fits were touring we would actually play that [over the PA] before we came onstage. Before you sent me the Shelley Fabares version, I never thought [the song] could be made uncreepy.”

Today we get to hear Beck’s contribution, a cover of John Lennon’s “Love,” which appeared in it’s original form on the 1970 album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.
