Audio: Brian Eno Curates Fela Vinyl Box Set #3 – Listen to Live ‘Colonial Mentality’ Right Now! Plus More

Brian Eno, who curates the new Fela Anikulakpo Kuti box set, says Fela’s music changed his life:

“Before about mid-September 1973 I didn’t have much interest in polyrhythmic music. I didn’t really get it. That all changed one autumn day when I walked into Stern’s Record Shop off Tottenham Court Road. For reasons I’ve long forgotten, I left the store with an album that was to change my life dramatically. It was Afrodisiac by Fela Ransome-Kuti (as he was then known) and his band The Africa 70. I remember the first time I listened and how dazzled I was by the groove and the rhythmic complexity, and by the raw, harsh sounds of the brass, like Mack trucks hurtling across highways with their horns blaring. Everything I thought I knew about music at that point was up in the air again. The sheer force and drive of this wild Nigerian stuff blew my mind. My friend Robert Wyatt called it ‘Jazz from another planet’ – and suddenly I thought I understood the point of jazz, until then an almost alien music to me.”

Fela has been called the “Bob Dylan of Africa.”

Maybe his music will change your life too!

Check out this live version of the late African musical legend’s “Colonial Mentality,” recorded at the New Afrika Shine in Fela’s hometown of Lagos. The track features Femi Kuti on sax.

Below is a player loaded with an interview with Alex Gibney who directed the new film “Finding Fela,” the live recording of “Colonial Mentality,” “Lover,” “Power Show” and “Zombie” from FELA! Original Broadway Cast.

A MESSAGE FROM THOM YORKE AND NIGEL GODRICH (& A New Thom Yorke Album!)

This showed up in my email this morning:

A MESSAGE FROM THOM YORKE AND NIGEL GODRICH

As an experiment we are using a new version of BitTorrent to distribute a new Thom Yorke record.

The new Torrent files have a pay gate to access a bundle of files..

The files can be anything, but in this case is an ‘album’.

It’s an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around …

If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work.

Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves.

Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers.

If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.

The torrent mechanism does not require any server uploading or hosting costs or ‘cloud’ malarkey.

It’s a self-contained embeddable shop front…

The network not only carries the traffic, it also hosts the file. The file is in the network.

Oh yes and it’s called

Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes.

Thom Yorke & Nigel Godrich

You can get the album for $6 here.

You can watch a video for the track “A Brain In A Bottle” Here.

Video: Laura Marling & Eddie Berman Transform Bob Dylan’s ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ – Listen Right Now!

Laura Marling and Eddie Berman.

Singer-songwriters Laura Marling and Eddie Berman collaborate here on a version of Bob Dylan’s 1965 hit, “Like A Rolling Stone.”

L.A.-based Berman and England’s Marling turn Dylan’s caustic rocker into an introverted, brooding folk song.

It’s a powerful and very different version of this classic, and it will be on Berman’s upcoming album, Polyhymnia, due out October 21, 2014.

Give it a listen.

Marling and Berman previously covered Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark.”

You can listen to Berman’s last album, This Past Storm, here.

Audio/ Video: Listen To Bob Dylan’s 2001 LP “Love And Theft” As Performed Live

On September 11, 2001, 13 years ago, Bob Dylan released “Love And Theft,” his 31st studio album.

The album followed the acclaimed Daniel Lanois/ Dylan produced Time Out Of Mind, and established that Dylan was back in the saddle, writing new, amazing songs and making tremendously good albums. After it came Modern Times, which some critics looked at as the third of a trilogy of superb albums.

Dylan sees it differently, at least he did when he spoke to Jonathan Lethem in 2006.

Time Out of Mind was me getting back in and fighting my way out of the corner. But by the time I made “Love And Theft,” I was out of the corner. On this record, I ain’t nowhere, you can’t find me anywhere, because I’m way gone from the corner. I would think more of “Love And Theft” as the beginning of a trilogy, if there’s going to be a trilogy. If I decide I want to go back into the studio.

It turns out that Dylan has performed every song on the album life.

Here is a live version of the album I put together.

Enjoy.

Audio: Listen To Karen O’s New Album, ‘Crush Songs’

Right now NPR is streaming the entire Karen O solo album, Crush Songs.

This is a very lo-fi affair. It sounds like it was recorded in a bedroom to a cassette recorder, which is its charm.

Sometimes less really is more.
