Classic Photo of Bob Dylan, Suze Rotolo – ‘Ballad In Plain D’

[Please note: The original inspiration for this post was the above photo, which I saw online and which was misidentified as being a photo of Bob Dylan, Suze Rotolo and her older sister Carla Rotolo. After the post went up it was brought to my attention that the woman identified as Carla Rotolo was actually Lena Sepncer, who ran the club Cafe Lena. Since the post was already live I edited it accordingly.]

The above photo by Joe Alper, taken in the early ’60s, is of Bob Dylan, his one-time girlfriend Suze Rotolo (the girl with Dylan on the cover of The Freewheelin’Bob Dylan) and Lena Spencer, who ran the Caffe Lena club in Saratoga Springs, NY where Dylan played.

Here is a video which includes a picture of Suze’s older sister, Carla.

In Suze Rotolo’s book, “A Freewheelin’ Time,” in a section called “Ballad” she writes:

For a long time my mother had made it clear she didn’t think much of Bobby. By the time Freewheelin’ came out, she and Fred had long since moved to New Jersey. It was easier all around to avoid contact… My mother had objected to Bob from the moment she laid eyes on him back in 1961, but the animosity between my sister and Bob developed over time. Both my mother and Carla were running interference on our relationship, and he couldn’t help resenitng that. I couldnt handle the constant pressure…”

Ballad In Plain D by Bob Dylan on Grooveshark

Here are some of the lyrics from Dylan’s “Ballad In Plain D,” which appeared on Another Side Of Bob Dylan in 1964. Dylan had never performed this song live.

Through young summer’s breeze, I stole her away
From her mother and sister, though close did they stay
Each one of them suffering from the failures of their day
With strings of guilt they tried hard to guide us

Of the two sisters, I loved the young
With sensitive instincts, she was the creative one
The constant scapegoat, she was easily undone
By the jealousy of others around her

For her parasite sister, I had no respect
Bound by her boredom, her pride to protect
Countless visions of the other she’d reflect
As a crutch for her scenes and her society

You can check out all of the lyrics here.

Exclusive: Rare ’67 Dylan Photo Plus ‘Complete Basement Tapes’ Unreleased Track List & More

Thirty songs that have not previously been released — either officially or on bootlegs — are part of the 138 tracks on the upcoming set, The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11, to be released November 4, 2014.

Of those 30 tracks, 13 were recorded in the “Red Room” at Bob Dylan’s house in Woodstock, where the “Basement Tapes” sessions began before moving to the Big Pink house in West Saugerries. As I previously reported, the “Red Room” was not painted red at the time the recordings were made.

The Red Room tracks: “Jelly Bean,” “Any Time,” “Hallelujah, I’ve Just Been Moved,” “My Buckets got a Hole In It,” “That’s The Breaks,” “Down By The Station,” “Edge Of the Ocean,” “Two Dollars and 99 Cents,” “Northern Claim,” Love is Only Mine,” “Pretty Mary,” “Mr. Blue” and “Roll On Train.”

In a few cases a portion of a recording has been heard before. This is so with “Bourbon Street,” which in the version to be released includes an additional four minutes of music, and “900 Miles From My Home.”

“‘900 miles’ is beautiful and not the fragment that you think it is,’ said a source who has heard the Complete Basement Tapes set. “It’s a fully realized version.”

According to my source, this is the complete list of previously unreleased tracks with asterisks marking the “Red Room” recordings:

1. Jelly Bean *
2. Any Time*
3. Hallelujah, I’ve Just Been Moved (trad, arr by Bob Dylan)*
4. My Buckets got a Hole In It (Clarence Williams)*
5. That’s The Breaks*
6. Down By the Station*
7. Edge of the Ocean *
8. Two Dollars and 99 Cents*
9. Northern Claim*
10. Love is Only Mine*
11. Pretty Mary*
12. Mr. Blue (Dewayne Blackwell)*
13. Roll On Train*
14. Will the Circle Be Unbroken
15. She’s On My Mind Again
16. I Shall be Released Take 1
17. Blowin’ in the Wind
18. One Too Many Mornings
19. A Satisfied Mind (Joe Hayes and Jack Rhodes)
20. It Ain’t Me Babe
21. If I Were a Carpenter (Tim Hardin)
22. Ain’t No More Cain (Take 1) (Trad. Arr. By Bob Dylan)
23. Ain’t No More Cain (Take 2) (Trad. Arr by Bob Dylan)
24. My Woman She’s A-Leavin’
25. Mary Lou, I love you Too
26. Dress it Up, Better Have it All
27. What’s It Gonna Be When It Comes Up
28. 900 Miles From My Home
29. Wild Wolf
30. Bourbon Street (an additional 4 minutes added to the track that has not been circulated).

Below are a some versions of songs that Dylan and The Band covered.

Hank Williams, “My Buckets Got a Hole In It”:

The Fleetwoods, “Mr. Blue”:

Porter Wagoner, “A Satisfied Mind”:

Burial Steps Out of the Shadows, Posts Photo

The until now mysterious artist known as Burial has posted what appears to be a photo of himself at the website of Hyperdub, the label that has released all his music, along with a message:

Hi this is will, I just want to say thank you to anyone out there who liked my burial tunes & supported me over the years. its really appreciated. Massive thank you anyone who got my records & all producers, DJs, radio stations, labels, shops, writers & journalists.. anyone who played my tunes, gave them a listen, or helped me out with it, made me want to keep going with it. Also shout out anyone who sent me tunes, messages, anyone I met along the way & a big shout out to anyone who supports or does independent & underground music.

I want to do some new tunes this year to send to my boss Steve and the label because they’ve been going 10 years now and have stuck by me. Hopefully by the end of most years I have done some tunes that are decent enough to release. but Dark Souls 2 is on the horizon soon so I’m not sure if I will have many new tunes for a while because I need to play that game a lot. But I’m going to try to get some new tunes together before it comes out.

Also I want to go and find some old tunes I did that still sound alright and never came out.. It would be nice to finally put some of them out on vinyl one day.

Also I want to tell my Mum my Dad my brothers and my sister that I love them to bits. Big shout out to the UK & everywhere else. Cheers & respect to everyone and anyone…be safe & take care

Tom Waits Collaborating with Robert Wilson on “Death car”

Photo from Robert Wilson’s Instagram page of the Royal Danish Theater.

Tom Waits and Robert Wilson are staging a play, “Death car,” based on the story of Bonnie and Clyde, according to The Eyeball Kid.

The play is scheduled to Premiere on November 7, 2014 in Copenhagen.

Apparently they’re casting the play right now. This went up the other day on Robert Wilson’s Instagram page:

“#casting #BONNIE & #CLYDE with Tom Waits in #Copenhagen at the #Royal #Danish #Theatre”

Self-portrait by Tom Waits.

Here’s The Eyeball Kid’s translation of a press release from the Danish Royal Theatre:

The production Death car reunites Tom Waits and Robert Wilson, who collaborated on productions like The black rider and Woyzeck, for the first time in 14 years.

Death car is inspired by the story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, a romantically involved couple of bankrobbers that defied authorities and caused a national media frenzy in the US in the 1930’s.

Their dramatic life is packed with feaurures that continue to fascinate present day audiences all over the world: a sheer lack of respect for banks and authorities, fast cars, weapons, violence, a love story, a desperate escape and their inevitable death.

The play is produced by Nicolai Vemming / UnlimitedArts in collaboration with the Royal Theatre and a number of international partners.

The play will move on to Germany, Norway and The Netherlands following the Copenhagen run, according to a Danish paper.

Ringo Starr, The Photographer: A Gallery Of His Beatles Photos

Photo by Ringo Starr via The Hollywood Reporter.

A book of photos by Ringo Star, “Photograph,” was published earlier this year. Turns out the Beatles’ drummer and sometime singer is a pretty good photographer.

You can check out a gallery of his photos (24 of them) at the CBS News site and there are nine different photos by Ringo at The Hollywood Reporter. It’s definitely work a look if you care about the Fab Four.

Just a couple of weeks ago Lou did a photo session intended to become a print ad for his friend Henri Seydoux’s French audio headphones company Parrot. The renowned photographer Jean Baptiste Mondino took the shots, and this was the very last shot he took. Always a tower of strength. – Tom Sarig

Banksy NYC Art Day #29: Banality Of Evil

I am saddened as I consider that soon this wonderful Banksy street art exhibit will end. In just two more days “Better Out Than In’ will be over.

It’s really been fun to wake up each day in anticipation of a new Banksy art work on the streets of New York.

Enjoy the last few days. I certainly will.

Palma Violets Rock Treasure Island Fest

20131020-140442.jpg

The Palma Violets are a scruffy bunch, but their reverby guitar heavy garage punk more than makes up for it.

It was sunny out on the island but a cool wind dimmed the heat. That didn’t stop a good-sized crowd from moving to the beat as the London-based quartet filled the air with a sound more fitting for an indoors venue near the midnight hour.

Samuel Fryer has a sandblasting guitar sound, and he comes through with most of the lead vocals, but it’s bassist Alex Jesson who’s got the rock star moves.

Ripping through their terrific debt album, including their hit “Best of Friends,” in about 35 minutes, the group delivered one high octane blast of pleasure after another. They did fine on the big stage but now is the time to catch them in a club if you can.
