Audio: Tom Robinson Band Does Bob Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released’ – 1977

Here is a 1977 recording by the Tom Robinson Band of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.”

The recording was the B-side of Robinson’s first single, which reached #5 on the British charts.

During one interview Robinson said of his own political songs:

I never wanted it to become a fossilised museum piece about ancient injustices, it was always intended more as journalism than poetry. But to be honest it seemed a natural thing to do anyway. Bob Dylan was a big role model for me, and he constantly updates and changes lyrics when performing live. Part of the fascination of being a Dylan fan is hearing the different versions of “Tangled Up In Blue.” It’s fascinating to constantly get new angles on that dense and intriguing story.

Live version:

Audio: Jazz Versions of Bob Dylan Songs – ‘I Shall Be Released,’ ‘My Back Pages,’ ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ & More

Nina Simone covered a number of Dylan songs.

With Dylan covering a jazz song — Frank Sinatra’s “Full Moon and Empty Arms,” I thought it would be fun to hear some jazz musicians playing Dylan songs.

Check these out.

Audio: Pre-Big Star Alex Chilton & the Box Tops do ‘I Shall Be Released’ Plus More

Alex Chilton fronting the Box Tops.

Before Alex Chilton formed Big Star with Chris Bell, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel, he was the singer/frontman/Mr. Personality of the Box Tops, the group that scored a #1 hit with “The Letter.”

While still in the Bob Tops, Chilton head The Band’s “Music From Big Pink, flipped over “I Shall Be Released” and recorded the song for the Box Tops 1969 album, Dimensions. The group’s cover version of “I Shall Be Released” reached #67 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

After he quit the Box Tops, Chilton played folk music in Greenwich Village, part of a period of growth and transition that led to Big Star.

Plus live recordings of Chilton in February 13, 1997 at The Knitting Factory in New York performing “I Walk The Line,” “Motel Blues,” “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”

Video: Joni Mitchell Sings ‘Girl From the North Country.’ ‘I Shall Be Released’ & More

Joni Mitchell, 1969.

Joni Mitchell made some negative comments about Bob Dylan in 2010 and more recently.

Still, that didn’t stop her earlier in her career from singing his songs.

Check these out.

Audio: Jeff Buckley Covers Bob Dylan – ‘Just Like A Woman,’ ‘I Shall Be Released’ & More

Today I’ve got some live recordings Jeff Buckley made of Bob Dylan songs. Three appeared on the legacy edition of Live at Sin-é. The others are a bit more obscure.

Enjoy.

Jeff Buckley, “Just Like A Woman,” live at July 19, 1993; August 17, 1993 at Sin-é, New York, NY.

“I Shall Be Released”:

“If You See her, Say Hello”:

Here’s a beautiful version of “I Shall Be Released.” It’s crazy. A DJ has Jeff on the phone. Musicians with the DJ play the song and over the phone Jeff sings it.
